Artwork
Drawing and painting seem to have been a favourite pastime of some of the Bonallacks and Elgars on the maternal side of the family. The first picture below is a watercolour of St Anne’s Gate Salisbury, by singer Rosie Bonallack in 1902.
This is a card by her architect husband, Fred Elgar, probably a little later.
And this is a watercolour of Singapore by their elder daughter Madge in the 1950s. Madge was a commercial artist and an impeccable calligrapher, but by bad luck the only bomb ever dropped on Salisbury during World War II, reportedly jettisoned by a Junkers 88 on its way back to Germany, fell on her studio and destroyed all the works it contained.
Several generations later, artists descended from Fred and Rosie are still going strong. Rob Elgar is a professional artist who works to commission: above are two of his paintings that are for sale (price on application to rob@theelgars.co.uk). Rob's work can also be found at rob@robelgardesign.co.uk, robelgar.webflow.io and
robelgardesign.co.uk.
If any other relatives see this site and would like to contribute a piece in any medium, it will be a pleasure to upload them. In the meantime, below are drawings by two of Fred and Rosie’s great granddaughters, Julia and Maria. The cartoons further down that are signed Macla are also by Maria. The two sisters are lucky in that their mother Beatriz also paints, see the portrait of a cat below. Perhaps grandson Jude, the babe in arms here, will end up wielding a pencil or a brush himself.
